Explore the driftless region of southwest Wisconsin, a unique and beautiful area filled with steep hills and deep valleys, forests and ice cold streams. The driftless area is named for the lack of "drift" the term used for the silt, clay, sand and rock left behind by the retreating glaciers of the last ice ages. The area covers around 16,000 square miles and extends into southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa and northwest Illinois. Because the area escaped the previous ice ages the landscape it is estimated to be over 500,000 years old.
The driftless area has much to offer visitors seeking a quiet retreat to relax, bicycle or hike. Its cold streams also attract many trout fishers for some of the finest fishing in the midwest. The Kickapoo, the "world's crookedest river" flows though the heart of the region offering many miles of canoeing, kayaking and floating enjoyment. In addition to the recreational opportunities, the driftless region is also home to an active and growing (no pun intended) organic farming industry, spurred by the growth of Organic Valley Family of Farms, one of the largest organic food companies in the country, headquartered in La Farge, Wisconsin.
